Curriculum Information

The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

Our first grade curriculum is dedicated to meet each state standard. Below you will find a brief description of our classroom curriculum.

First Grade Curriculum Resources

Everyday Mathematics

Our math program is a hands-on approach using a variety of manipulatives to bolster math comprehension. We use the Everyday Math Program as a resource to help teach math at John Glenn.

Science and Social Studies

We use a variety of resources to supplement our Science and Social Studies textbook.  We complete many hands on experiments and investigations.  We cover topics such as magnets, forces, weather, and animals.  In Social Studies we learn all about communities, families, and Americans long ago.  We will also learn about jobs and businesses through Junior Achievement lessons.

Writing

As students develop as writers throughout the school year, we will focus on writing opinion pieces, fact writing, “how to” writing pieces and narrative writing.

Reading Workshop Model

We will be implementing the reading workshop model for the first time this year.  The format gives students tools for selecting and comprehending literature, students who were once reluctant to read now find themselves with the skills needed to be successful readers. Over the course of the year, students read many books and are encouraged to do as good readers do in exploring different genres, authors, and texts. The program emphasizes the interaction between readers and text. Students learn to ask questions, make connections with prior knowledge and previously read texts, and ask questions to clarify faulty comprehension they recognize has occurred. The program includes peer conferences and teacher conferences with students but emphasizes students' independence and allows them to become successful readers outside of the classroom.
